Law Must Prioritize Public Rights

Every law must prioritize public rights. Public rights must also be prioritized in the creation of laws on media convergence. These public rights include the right to access, the right to receive liberating broadcasts, and the right to complain, said Paulus Widianto from the Cross-Community Media Association (MediaLink), Tuesday (27/12).

In the Public Seminar “Media Convergence Regulation and Public Rights” at the FISIP lecture building, Brawijaya University (UB), Paulus revealed that he always prioritizes public rights.

"In every criticism of the law, I always prioritize public rights," until MediaLink represented by Paulus considered it necessary to have a guarantee of public rights protection in the regulation of media convergence. Moreover, according to a number of analysts, the Media Convergence Bill made by the government is considered more inclined towards business interests than the public.

Paulus added that after holding discussions in several cities such as Yogyakarta and Jakarta, there needs to be a balance between technological development, economic behavior, and protection of public rights.

In this FISIP, Internews, and MediaLink collaboration seminar, one of them raised the issue of the position of the Media Convergence Law. How to position previous legislation, such as the Telecommunications Law, Broadcasting Law, Information and Electronic Transactions Law and the Press Law. (cah/dmb)
