Revitalization of Merdeka Square in Malang City Begins

The hope of Malang City residents to have a beautiful, healthy, and family-friendly town square seems to be about to come true. Officially, the laying of the first stone for the revitalization of Merdeka Square was carried out by the Mayor of Malang, H. Moch. Anton, Monday (08/12).

The construction of the Merdeka Square in Malang City itself is the result of CSR funds. (Corporate Social Responsibility) Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) worth Rp. 5,9 billion and is scheduled to be completed in April 2015. During the construction process, Alun-alun Merdeka must be free from PKL (Street Vendors).

Head of the Malang City Cleanliness and Parks Service (DKP), Drs. Wasto, SH, MH revealed that the revitalization of Merdeka Square itself is a program that has been planned since 2013. The design of this square was taken from the winner of the square design competition held some time ago but has been refined again.

"From the refinement of the concept of the town square that was created, it is hoped that it can make the town square of Malang City even more beautiful and become an icon of pride," explained Wasto, Monday (08/12).

In addition to the revitalization of the town square, Wasto added that Malang City will build more parks in Malang City. After Merdeka Square, through CSR funds Malang City will also build the Malabar City Forest.

Head of the BRI Malang Regional Office, Mardi Wibawa, said that the construction of Alun-alun Merdeka is proof that BRI is not only seeking profit but also to bring benefits to many people.

"BRI has made many socialization programs, but the construction of this city park is the first. The construction of the Malang City square is a history," explained Mardi.

In order to revitalize Alun-alun Merdeka, Mardi admitted that BRI disbursed funds of Rp 5,9 billion. He hopes that everything can run smoothly so that in April 2015 Alun-alun Merdeka will be completed. "Hopefully the construction of the Malang City square can bring more benefits to the community," he concluded. (cah/yon)
