USAID-IUWASH Ready to Support Malang City's Clean Water and Sanitation Program

Malang City is targeted for three years to resolve the problem of clean water and sanitation. Synergistic and integrated handling must exist to create this, namely with the cooperation of all parties such as NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations), media, investors, and others.

That was what was conveyed by the Regional Secretary of Malang City, Ir. Cipto Wiyono, M.Si when delivering the message of the Mayor of Malang, H. Moch. Anton in the Visioning Workshop event for the Clean Water and Sanitation Program for Policy Makers of Malang City in collaboration with United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through Indonesia Urban Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (IUWASH).

The event was held in the Meeting Room of Malang City Hall, Tuesday (23/12). "The mayor advised related parties such as DKP (Cleanliness and Parks Service, ed.) and PDAM (Regional Drinking Water Company, ed.) to immediately resolve slum areas, sanitation, and clean water. In 2019 it must be one hundred percent, and even in 2018 it can be resolved, especially regarding slum houses," added Cipto.

"Malang City wants to be a pioneer in professional clean water management. Moreover, supported by the excellent performance and achievements of PDAM, we are optimistic that the sanitation and clean water program can be implemented optimally. All parties must support, including the community as the main object," explained the bespectacled man.

Meanwhile, Mr. Lutz Kleeberg, Senior Sanitation Advisor IUWASH said that 70 percent of river water is polluted and this cannot be allowed. "Malang City is very good at handling clean water, especially PDAM which is the best example in Indonesia," he said.

"We are ready one hundred percent to support the program in overcoming water pollution and sanitation. We also hope that this good relationship and cooperation can continue. The response and actions taken by the Malang City Government are very good towards resolving various problems that must be supported by all parties," added Lutz.

On the other hand, the Head of the Malang City DKP Drs. Wasto, SH, MH said that access to clean water, apart from being a community need, is also one of the MDGs targets. (Millennium Development Goals, ed).
