BI Malang Urges Public to Exchange New Money at Banks

In the past few days, around the Merdeka Square in Malang and several other places, new money exchange service providers have been seen. Although Lebaran is still a long way off, there are already many providers of new money exchange services.

In relation to this, the Head of the Malang Bank Indonesia (BI) Representative Office, Dudi Herawadi, appealed to the public that if they want to exchange new money, they should only do so at BI or at general banks and Rural Credit Banks (BPR) appointed by BI.

"BI Malang will open a new money exchange on July 6-16, 2015. Although this new money exchange is the public's choice, at least it can anticipate the presence of counterfeit money if exchanging on the side of the road," explained Dudi, Friday (26/6).

For law enforcers, he continued, it is still gray regarding the legal sanctions, because there are no specific rules governing the prohibition of exchanging new money among individuals. "We can't do much, and only give an appeal not to open stalls in front of the BI Malang office," added Dudi.

But what needs to be remembered, he said, is that money is a means of payment, not a commodity that can be freely traded in society. "For residents who want to exchange new money at stalls on the side of the road, they should be vigilant," he appealed. (say/yon)
