This collaborative program between the Malang City Agriculture Service and the 0833/Baladhika Jaya Malang Military District Command targets 1.214 hectares of rice fields in Malang City. "Amidst the decreasing number of rice fields in urban areas, the simultaneous planting program is a good breakthrough," said the man who is familiarly called Abah Anton.

According to him, there must be a regulation to protect rice fields from being converted, and also not sold by the community. "The Malang City Government strongly supports this central government program so that food self-sufficiency can be optimal," added the PKB politician.

"We from the Malang City Government will continue to help farmers through various policies, especially those in the Agriculture Service. Thus, they will become productive farmers and produce quality agricultural products, especially rice as our main food source," explained Abah Anton.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Malang City Agriculture Service, Ir. Hadi Santoso said that the planting program found the right moment during the rainy season with good frequency. "There are two commonly known planting season periods, namely the Okmar planting program (October-March) for the rainy season, and the Asep planting program (April-September) for the dry season," he explained.

The man who is often called Soni added that for Malang City, the planting and harvesting period can be three to four times with a production capacity in one year reaching 13.500 tons of milled rice from 2.053 tons of planting figures in a year. "What is proud is that even though Malang City's land is relatively small, it turns out that the quality of Malang City's rice is the best in East Java and its selling value is also the highest," he continued.

In fact, he said, Malang City has twice received food security awards because of its high productivity. With 163 farmer groups and 28 farmer groups (gapoktan), the challenge for Malang City is the factor of changing functions.

"We have facilitated the legality of farmers in Malang City, so that if there is a government assistance program, it can be distributed optimally. Currently we are planting IR 30 rice which is premium quality rice," concluded Soni. (say/yon)
