To get this remission, there are several requirements that must be met by the inmates, such as having served at least six months of their sentence, meeting administrative requirements and being of good behavior. The prison also provides a special assessment based on criteria they determine internally.

That was what was conveyed by the Acting Head of Class I Lowokwaru Prison, Agus Heryanto after the ceremony for the 71st Anniversary of Indonesian Independence in the local prison yard, Wednesday (17/8). The ceremony was also attended by the Mayor of Malang, the Malang City Police Chief, the Dandim 0833 Malang City, and several other officials. Meanwhile, the ceremony participants were also attended by inmates from the Sukun Class IIA Women's Prison.

Agus added that the number of inmates currently after deducting those who received remission is 2.081 people consisting of 1.447 inmates and 634 prisoners. "The capacity or capacity of the prison itself is actually only for 937 people. So in prison there are always over capacity because the occupancy rate is always increasing at all times," he explained.

To overcome this, Agus explained, the prison provides sailing training to several other prisons, such as Madiun, Pamekasan, and Porong. Every month there are at least 20 inmates who participate, so that it can reduce the capacity. "We always do that routinely every month, because at any time our inmates always experience an increase," he explained.

Meanwhile, regarding prisoners involved in drug and corruption cases, today none have received remission. According to Agus, the prison actually proposed 200 people, but until now there has been no decision from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights. "We are still waiting for the results of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights' revision regarding PP 99 of 2012 which regulates the requirements and procedures for implementing the rights of correctional inmates. However, we still prioritize the proposal," he explained.

Meanwhile, Malang Mayor H. Moch. Anton hopes that the prison will remain conducive even though the inmates are quite large and exceed capacity. In addition, the PKB politician also hopes that the prison will always be free from drugs and handphone so that if it is like that, it does not give rise to negative thoughts in society.

"So far, the public has always assumed that prisons are one of the dens of drug trafficking. We hope that is not true," he said. (say/yon)
