Germas Creates a Healthy Indonesia

Jakarta, 15 November 2016 - Currently, Indonesia is facing a major challenge, namely health problems. triple burden because there are still infectious diseases, increasing non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and diseases that should have been resolved reappear. In the 1990s, infectious diseases such as ISPA, Tuberculosis and Diarrhea were the most common diseases in health services.

However, changes in people's lifestyles are one of the causes of shifting disease patterns (epidemiological transition). In 2015, NCDs such as Stroke, Coronary Heart Disease (CHD), Cancer and Diabetes were ranked highest.

A valuable lesson in the era of National Health Insurance (JKN), much of the budget is absorbed to finance catastrophic diseases, namely: CHD, Chronic Kidney Failure, Cancer, and Stroke. In addition, JKN participant health services are also dominated by health financing at the advanced level compared to the basic level. This fact needs to be followed up because it has the potential to become an extraordinary burden on state finances.

The increase in PTM can reduce the productivity of human resources, even the quality of the nation's generation. This also has an impact on the large burden on the government because handling PTM requires large costs. Ultimately, health will greatly affect social and economic development.

"The large number of productive age population who should contribute to development will actually be threatened if their health is disrupted by NCDs and unhealthy behavior," said the Indonesian Minister of Health, Nila Farid Moeloek in her speech at the 52nd National Health Day (HKN) in 2016 in Jakarta, Monday (14/11).

Therefore, the Indonesian Ministry of Health specifically reminds the public to maintain their health through the Healthy Living Community Movement (GERMAS) in order to realize a healthy Indonesia.

About the Healthy Living Community Movement (Germas)
The Healthy Living Community Movement (Germas) is a systematic and planned action carried out together by all components of the nation with awareness, willingness and ability to behave healthily to improve the quality of life. The implementation of Germas must start from the family, because the family is the smallest part of society that forms personality.

Germas can be done by: Doing physical activity, Consuming vegetables and fruit, Not smoking, Not consuming alcohol, Checking health regularly, Cleaning the environment, and Using a toilet.

In the initial stage, Germas nationally began by focusing on three activities, namely: 1) Doing physical activity for 30 minutes per day, 2) Consuming fruits and vegetables; and 3) Checking health regularly.

"These three activities can be started by yourself and your family, done right now, and do not require a lot of money," said the Minister of Health.

Germas is a national movement initiated by the President of the Republic of Indonesia which prioritizes promotive and preventive efforts, without neglecting curative-rehabilitative efforts by involving all components of the nation in popularizing a healthy paradigm.

To make Germas a success, we cannot only rely on the role of the health sector. The role of Ministries and Institutions in other sectors also determines, and is supported by the participation of all levels of society. Starting from individuals, families, and communities in practicing a healthy lifestyle, academics, the business world, community organizations, and professional organizations in motivating their members to behave healthily. As well as the Government at both the central and regional levels in preparing supporting facilities and infrastructure, monitoring and evaluating its implementation.

One of the real cross-sectoral supports for the success of Germas includes the Community-Based Infrastructure Program (IBM) of the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing which focuses on the development of access to drinking water, sanitation, and habitable housing which are basic infrastructure that support Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS) and the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency in terms of food safety.

In everyday life, healthy living practices are one form of Mental Revolution. Germas invites the community to cultivate healthy living, in order to be able to change unhealthy habits or behaviors. For this reason, the Government of the Republic of Indonesia represented by the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Puan Maharani, launched Germas on November 15, 2016 in Bantul Regency, DI Yogyakarta.

Not only in Bantul, Germas was also launched in nine other regions, namely Bogor Regency (West Java), Pandeglang Regency (Banten), Batam City (Riau Islands), Jambi City (Jambi), Surabaya (East Java), Madiun (East Java), Pare-pare (South Sulawesi), Purbalingga Regency (Central Java), Padang Pariaman Regency (West Sumatra).

The launch of Germas marks the peak of the commemoration of the 52nd National Health Day (HKN) which falls on November 12, 2016. This year, the 52nd HKN carries the theme "Indonesia Loves Health" with the sub-theme "Healthy Living Society, Strong Indonesia". This theme must be interpreted broadly along with the Healthy Indonesia Program with a family approach through the Healthy Living Community Movement (Germas).

Specifically, Germas is expected to increase community participation and role in living healthily, increase community productivity, and reduce the burden of health costs.
