Breadfruit (malangkota.go.id) – Hundreds of inmates of Sukun Class IIA Women's Penitentiary in Malang City participated in the Nusantara Mengaji Movement held in the prison hall, Thursday (20/4). This movement was initiated by the Minister of Law and Human Rights (HAM) of the Republic of Indonesia Yasonna Hamonangan Laoly, SH, M.Sc., Ph.D., which was also to enliven the celebration of the 53rd Correctional Service Day. The event began with a congregational Duha prayer led by member of Commission X of the Indonesian House of Representatives Lathifah Shohib.

Also present at this event were representatives from members of the Malang City DPRD and the East Java Provincial DPRD. In addition to completing the Al-Quran and performing the Duha prayer, the Correctional Inmates (WBP) also showed their skills in singing Islamic songs and reciting salawat to the Prophet Muhammad SAW. They performed convincingly in front of their colleagues, wardens and council members.

Head of Prison, Anies Joeliati, said that the program of reciting the Koran and praying Duha in congregation is carried out every day, considering that since 2015, there has been an An-Nisa Islamic Boarding School in this prison. Of the 520 inmates, around 400 are Muslim, and automatically they become students at the Islamic boarding school.

"With this Nusantara Mengaji program, it is hoped that it can increase the faith and piety of the inmates, so that they can later become better individuals while in prison and later when they return to society. While in prison, these inmates are also given various new knowledge and various skills for their provisions after they leave prison," said Anies.

Meanwhile, member of Commission X of the Indonesian House of Representatives Lathifah Shohib said that she greatly appreciated the various empowerment programs carried out by the prison. Such as the existence of Islamic boarding schools and various training or skills. "I am very proud of these inmates, because in addition to being good at reciting the Koran, diligent in performing the five daily prayers, good at reciting salawat, they also have many skills," she said proudly.

The PKB politician added that in the future, his party will continue to provide special attention to the inmates of the prison. As in Commission X of the Indonesian House of Representatives there is a book assistance program for the community, then later the Sukun Class IIA Prison will be allocated. "Thus, it will further increase the collection of books in this prison so that it is expected to increase scientific discourse for residents and wardens in this prison," concluded Lathifah.
