National Family Day 29 June 2017: An Important Milestone for Building Indonesian People

Jakarta - After 24 years, the commemoration of National Family Day (HARGANAS) has finally returned to its home, Lampung. Historically, National Family Day was first initiated in 1993 in Lampung Province. And this year, National Family Day will be commemorated again in Lampung Province on June 29. For this year's commemoration, HARGANAS will take the theme 'With Harganas We Build National Character Through Resilient Families'.

From the theme, one can draw a common thread that the family plays a very important role in the success of national development. Family development has a positive correlation to the progress of the nation. From the family, the initial steps are taken in order to build the character of the nation.

Family is the first environment known to a child since birth. In this environment, children learn and are taught various things that will be provisions for their future lives. Parents, especially mothers, are the first place of learning for their children. Therefore, the parenting pattern given by parents will determine the child's character later.

In order to build national character through family development, every family should be able to implement the eight family functions.

The eight functions of the family can be carried out in the form of education, care, habituation and role modelling.

The eight functions are:

  1. Function of Religion. In the family, a child gets to know religion for the first time. There are about 12 basic values as the foundation of religion for every child including faith, piety, honesty, tolerance, diligence, piety, obedience, helpfulness, discipline, politeness, patience and sincerity and affection.
  2. Social and Cultural Function. The instillation of noble cultural values is first carried out through the family. These noble values have become role models in social, national, and state life such as tolerance and mutual respect, mutual cooperation, politeness, togetherness and harmony, concern and love for the homeland or nationalism.
  3. Function of Love. The main component in forming a child's character is love. Every parent is obliged to give love to all their children. The attitude of love and affection must be instilled by parents to their children.
  4. Protection Function. The family must be able to be a safe place or shelter for children. Five basic values such as safe, forgiving, responsive, steadfast, and caring must be truly instilled in children.
  5. Reproductive Function. One of the goals of having a family is to preserve offspring. In carrying out the reproductive function, the family is obliged to instill three basic values, namely: responsibility, health, and steadfastness. So that the family can carry out the reproductive function well and responsibly.
  6. The function of educational socialization. In implementing this function, families must instill several main moral values, namely self-confidence, flexibility, pride, diligence, creativity, responsibility and cooperation.
  7. Economic Function. The family must be able to be a place to foster and instill financial values in order to create a prosperous family.
  8. Environmental Function. The family is the right place to instill values of concern for the environment so that it will later produce individuals who are responsible for preserving the environment.

To welcome National Family Day on June 29, Head of BKKBN Surya Chandra Surapaty provided special tips for every family celebrating it.

The tips include first, Gathering with Family. Try to gather with family every June 29th. Since that day is not a national holiday, set aside time to eat together, cook with family, schedule gathering together for at least 20 minutes a day.

Second, interaction with family members. Take time to talk to each other and share experiences and chat with all members, do not interact through social media. Direct communication is of better quality. Silaturahmi will further improve the relationship between families with each other.

Third, empowering families. Create activities that can utilize the potential of each family member. So that it can make family members become independent individuals, able to overcome various problems and challenges of life.

Based on Presidential Decree No. 39 of 2014 concerning HARGANAS, June 29 is not a national holiday even though it is commemorated every year as National Family Day and is commemorated every year by BKKBN with various related ministries by involving work partners such as the PKK Task Force.

Harganas Momentum is an effort to increase awareness and the role of society towards the importance of small, happy and prosperous families. By instilling the values of national life for family members from an early age, it will make the family a strong vehicle for the realization of a quality family.

Thus, this national price is expected to be a vehicle to make the Nawacita program of the Joko Widodo – Jusuf Kalla administration a success, especially point 5 of building quality human resources. (Directorate of IEC and Advocacy – BKKBN)
