Press Release Number: B- 064/Set/Rokum/MP 01/07/2017

The Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection (KPPPA) will hold the Peak Commemoration of National Children's Day (HAN) on July 23, 2017 in Pekanbaru, Riau. This was conveyed by the Acting Secretary of the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection who is also the Chairperson of the 2017 HAN Commemoration, Lenny Rosalin. The HAN commemoration is very important to raise the awareness and participation of all Indonesian people to continue to carry out their obligations and responsibilities to respect and ensure the fulfillment of children's rights. Carrying the theme Child Protection Starts from the Family, with the main message "I am an Indonesian Child, I am Happy", The HAN agenda began with a series of activities for the National Children's Forum (FAN) 2017 for three days centered at the Labersa Hotel Pekanbaru, Riau. The 2017 HAN commemoration is planned to be attended by the President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo and the Minister of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection, Yohana Yembise.

July 2017 – Pekanbaru, Riau, is ready to host the National Agenda for the 2017 National Children's Day Commemoration (HAN 2017). The HAN commemoration is interpreted as the concern of the entire Indonesian nation for the protection of Indonesian children so that they grow and develop optimally, by encouraging Indonesian families to become the first and main institution in providing protection to children, so that it will produce a healthy, intelligent, cheerful, noble and patriotic generation. The National Children's Day (HAN) commemoration has been held since 1986, based on Presidential Decree No. 44 of 1984.

Several recent events involving children have become a major concern. Various cases involving underage children such as child marriage, according to UNICEF (2016), there are 700 million women in the world who were married as children. The second problem is the threat of cigarettes, according to the Ministry of Health (2016), there has been an increase in novice smokers aged 10-14 years by 100% in less than 20 years, namely from 8,9% in 1995 to 18% in 2013) the problem of nutrition of Indonesian children, where around 37% of Indonesian children suffer from stunting and finally the rampant violence experienced by our children, especially sexual violence.

According to the Minister of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection, Yohana Yembise, there needs to be awareness that can encourage Indonesian families to have quality, insightful, skilled and comprehensive understanding of child rights and protection. The family is the beginning of the formation of individual maturity and personality structure of a child. Children will follow and imitate their parents with various habits and behaviors because children are a vulnerable group of creatures because they are under 18 years old. "The good and bad of the family will be a reflection of the child's future. The good and bad character/behavior of the child in the future is very much determined by the parenting pattern given by his family and his closest environment." said Yohana.

According to the chairman of the HAN 2017 committee, Lenny R Rosalin, the activity that will be held at the Riau Provincial Government Building Field will be attended by more than 5000 Indonesian children, some of whom are children who are members of the National Children's Forum (FAN) who are present representing 34 provinces. One of the important agendas of HAN 2017 is the reading of Children's Voice Indonesia represented by FAN children", explained Lenny.

For information, the 2017 HAN commemoration is combined with several other activities, which will be implemented throughout 2017. In addition to the FAN activity, the Child-Friendly Regency/City (KLA) Award will be held on July 22, 2017 in Pekanbaru City, Riau Province. The KLA Award is held periodically, and since 2015 it has been held every 2 years. The KLA Award is given to 126 Regency and City Regional Governments that have a strong commitment to developing their regions into child-friendly regions. Awards are also given to 10 Provincial Regional Governments that are able to mobilize KLA in regencies/cities in their regions. In the 2017 HAN Commemoration, the President of the Republic of Indonesia and the Minister of PPPA will also play with Indonesian children and witness the appreciation of arts and culture, performances by children from various regions in Indonesia.

Yohana stated that the theme of HAN 2017 is very relevant to the current conditions in the country. Currently, children are not only victims, but they are also often perpetrators of crimes. Cases of violence, whether they make children victims or perpetrators, need to be studied in depth and the best solution sought. Families have a role to protect children by providing parenting patterns that are in accordance with the principles used in the development of Indonesian Children, which refer to the CRC (Convention on the Rights of the Child), namely: Non-Discrimination; Best Interests of the Child; Right to Life, Survival, and Development; and Respect for Children's Views. "The conclusion is that the family has a role to protect children by providing parenting patterns that are in accordance with the principles used in the development of Indonesian Children, which refer to the CRC, namely: Non-Discrimination; Best Interests for the Child; Right to Life, Survival, and Development; and Respect for the Child's Views" added Yohana.

Through HAN which is commemorated every year, it is expected that all parties, especially families, can support and play an active role in fulfilling children's rights and providing special protection for all Indonesian children. Existing laws and policies must be implemented as well as possible by all components of the nation, for the best interests of 87 million Indonesian children.
