Sabilul Hikmah Islamic Boarding School Provides Street Children with Animal Husbandry Knowledge

Starfruit (malangkota.go.id) – Equipping its students, the majority of whom are street children, to be more independent, the Sabilul Hikmah Islamic Boarding School located on Jl. Polowijen I/190 RT04 RW02, Blimbing District, Malang City provides various entrepreneurial skills, one of which is training in making fermented feed for goats, Monday (7/8).

Street children students are trained to make fermented feed

The students looked enthusiastic in participating in the training that brought in instructors from Cemorokandang. The students' faces showed a strong desire to be able to raise goats so that they would no longer depend on the streets for a living.

The caretaker of Sabilul Hikmah Islamic Boarding School, Gus Ubaidillah Hamid, said that the training on making fermentation for goat feed was given to street children as a provision. Because as he said, Sabilul Hikmah Islamic Boarding School plans to raise goats to be used as a learning medium.

"The goat pen is now ready. Before the goats arrive, I hope the children already understand how to ferment feed," explained Gus Ubed, Ubaidillah Hamid's nickname, Monday (7/8).

This training, he added, deliberately brought in instructor Mr. Imron from Cemorokandang through many considerations. Among them is because Mr. Imron is a farmer who learned from zero and has now succeeded in developing a goat farm with fermented feed.

The hope is that with positive activities like this, street children will feel comfortable with the activities they do so that they do not return to the streets. In addition to raising goats, this Islamic boarding school also provides many other skills such as playing religious bands, trading flowers, pracangan, and others.

"In essence, we hope that after the children graduate from the Islamic boarding school, they will be able to be independent with the abilities they have," Gus Ubed hoped.

He revealed that in fact, there are many street children who have been trained and want to stay in the Islamic boarding school to deepen their knowledge at the Islamic boarding school that he currently manages. The number of students is no less than 300 street children. However, because the capacity of the boarding school is very limited, and also because of limited funds, many street children are sent home.

"If there were funds, we are ready to handle more street children. But what can we do, our capabilities are limited," said Gus Ubed.

The handling of street children, the story goes, is very different from ordinary children. Because they are used to living on the streets with various complex problems and are very vulnerable to crime.

"Unfortunately, so far there has been no special attention, either from the government or the community in particular. As a result, so far many have complained about the presence of street children, but have not found a way out," he explained further. (cah/yon)
