BSM Expected to be Able to Become One of the Solutions to Waste Problems

Jakarta (malangkota.go.id) – There are three main things that often become problems in a city, namely the issue of traffic jams (transportation), flooding, and also garbage. All three seem to be a specter, especially the garbage problem. Limited land faced with increasing volumes of garbage has the potential to cause a garbage crisis.

This is also the concern of the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) which was realized in a talk show with the theme 'Building a Circular Economy, Waste Management Through Waste Banks'.

The event, which was held at the Jakarta Convention Center, Friday (20/7), featured... best practice The waste banks that are considered successful are Malang City and Makassar City. "We chose these two cities because in fact their waste banks are developing and especially in Malang City, they are able to transform as an economic supporter in addition to the environmental mission," said the Director General of Waste Management, Waste, and Hazardous and Toxic Materials (PSLB3) of the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Rosa Vivien Ratnawati.

On this occasion, Malang City was attended by the Regional Secretary of Malang City Drs. Wasto, SH, MH who has also been involved in the world of waste management for a long time when he served as Head of the Department of Cleanliness and Parks (DKP) of Malang City. While Makasar City was attended directly by the Mayor of Makassar Danny Pomanto.

The current pile of waste in Malang City reaches 659,88 tons per day, and it will continue to increase along with the increasing population. Moreover, as a migrant city, the density and density of housing will be even higher in a city with a population composition of more than one million when including its immigrant residents.

Based on the type, detailed 230,96 tons of inorganic waste (35 percent) and 428,92 tons of organic waste (65 percent). Bank Sampah Malang also continues to educate residents to become customers who automatically support waste processing steps through the 3R strategy. (Reduce, Recycle, Reuse).

"Until now, the number of BSM customers has reached 30 thousand customers with a turnover of 300 million per month. BSM has been able to sort 72 types of waste that have economic value and a processing capacity of five tons per day. This means that there are still 2,1 percent of inorganic waste that can be reduced through the waste bank program," Wasto explained clearly.

According to him, this is a potential in itself because there is an opportunity to increase the capacity of inorganic waste processing. "This is linear with the strategy of empowerment and improving economic quality," he added again.

Since operating in 2011, BSM now also provides services to customers outside the city, namely from Malang Regency, Batu City and Blitar City. By considering the economic potential of waste, he explained that the Malang City Government has built an Integrated Waste Processing Facility (TPST) in Supit Urang. In the future, around the TPST area, it is planned to build a warehouse and production site worth Rp2 billion.

The man who previously served as the Head of Bappeda Malang City explained that BSM has been able to come up with innovations such as borrowing money to pay for garbage, paying for electricity with garbage, paying for school with garbage, including inspiring a garbage insurance clinic developed by Dr. Gamal Albinsaid.

Great hopes were also expressed by the Director General of Waste Management, Waste, and Hazardous and Toxic Materials (PSLB3) of the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Rosa Vivien Ratnawati. She hopes that BSM can be one part of the waste solution that can be applied in other areas.

"It is natural that Malang City received the top innovation award from the Government because it is factually true. There are piles of black gold in the trash," praised Rosa for the existence of BSM Malang City and the strategic steps of Malang City's waste management. (say/yon)
