Lowokwaru (malangkota.go.id) – While attending the Introduction to Academic and Student Culture (PBAK) event of the Faculty of Economics, Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University (UIN Maliki) Malang, Wednesday (15/8), Acting Mayor of Malang Drs. H. Sutiaji explained the meaning of leadership to new students.

He said never be discouraged even though you are looked down upon, and to be a leader you must be strong. The Acting Mayor of Malang told about the joys and sorrows of pioneering a career until now becoming the number one person in the Malang City Government.
He revealed that when he came to Malang City from Lamongan several decades ago, he was a nobody. Sutiaji studied at the State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Sunan Ampel, whose existence was still widely looked down upon at that time.
"I was never discouraged from studying at IAIN, because the campus, which is now UIN Maliki, has more knowledge than other campuses," said Sutiaji, Wednesday (15/8).
The provisions from the IAIN campus, said Sutiaji, were extraordinary in shaping his personality. That is why he is very happy to be able to attend the UIN Maliki campus and share knowledge with students.
On this occasion, Sutiaji also told the story of the twists and turns of being a member of the Malang City DPRD, then building his career to become Deputy Mayor of Malang, then currently becoming Acting Mayor of Malang, and now just waiting for the time to be inaugurated as Mayor of Malang.
The activity at UIN Maliki itself is an activity of the New Students of the Faculty of Economics (FE) UIN Maliki in welcoming new students. This activity is an annual agenda of FE UIN Maliki Malang by inviting successful figures to provide motivation to new students.
Dean of FE UIN Maliki Dr. H. Nur Asnawi, M.Ag confirmed that the activity at FE UIN Maliki is an annual academic activity to welcome new students. The number of new students accepted at FE UIN Maliki is 540 students, and the number of active students is currently 2.318 students.
"Before entering FE UIN, as many as 540 new students have gone through a very strict selection. Therefore, when they enter later, we hope that our children will be really serious about attending lectures," Nur emphasized.
Nur also hopes that the presence of the Acting Mayor of Malang who is an alumni of UIN Maliki this time can be an inspiration for FE UIN students and make them more enthusiastic in pursuing their studies. (cah/yon)
