The Public Needs to be Educated About the Dangers of Covid-19

Malang, (malangkota.go.id) – The coordination meeting (rakor) on enforcing health protocol discipline and handling Covid-19 was held online via video conference at the Ngalam Command Center, Malang City Hall, Sunday (31/01/2021) evening.

Malang Mayor, Drs. H. Sutiaji together with Forkopimda attended a coordination meeting with ministers and institutions

This coordination meeting was led by the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment of the Republic of Indonesia Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan together with the Minister of Home Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Minister of Health, Minister of Religion, Attorney General of the Republic of Indonesia, Commander of the TNI, KASAD, Chief of Police, Head of BNPB and attended by participants from central government officials, as well as heads of provincial/district/city regions.

"21 percent of national respondents believe that Covid-19 is a conspiracy. While in the low socio-economic this figure reaches 31 percent," explained Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan.

He added that among respondents from low socio-economic communities, only half (50%) were aware of the dangers of Covid-19. And only half (58 percent) were aware that if they were exposed to Covid-19, it could infect and endanger people around them. Coordinating Minister Luhut also emphasized that the spread of Covid-19 cases needed to be suppressed to prevent dangerous mutations of Covid-19 as happened in Brazil.

"We must avoid this, as happened in South Africa, the vaccine is not effective against dangerous mutations of Covid-19. Don't let it happen. So I hope we must realize that there is a big danger if we don't pay attention to this," he said.

Regarding the Implementation of Community Activity Restrictions (PPKM), Minister Luhut said that the decrease in mobility was only 15-25 percent so according to him, enforcement of discipline and PPKM compliance operations must be increased. "Historically, a decrease in mobility of more than 30 percent is needed to control the increase in Covid-19 cases," he added.

Coordinating Minister Luhut gave five directions to regional heads. First, Covid-19 is an RNA virus that is easily mutated. Uncontrolled transmission accelerates virus mutation. Transmission needs to be prevented to avoid the emergence of dangerous new variants such as the Brazilian and South African variants that cause a spike in cases and ineffective vaccines. The public needs to be educated on this to increase compliance with staying at home.

"Second, enforcement of PPKM rules must be carried out to reduce public mobility and increase compliance with 3M. This is important to reduce the addition of new cases and death rates. With the current implementation of PPKM, public mobility is estimated to only decrease by 15-25 percent on weekdays," said Luhut.

In fact, he said, with measurement the same, the Large-Scale Social Restrictions (PSBB) of DKI Jakarta in September can reduce mobility by 30-40 percent so that the number of additional cases can decrease significantly. It is necessary to enforce compliance with the current PPKM where work from home (WFH) 75 percent in the sector non-essential and restaurant capacity is only 25 percent.

Third, behavioral change operations are expected to be more integrated and carried out in a measured manner between the TNI, POLRI, and Satpol PP so that the economy can still run but the number of cases can be suppressed. Justice operations need to be expanded to office and restaurant areas to ensure that PPKM is running. Fourth, the public needs to be educated about the proper use of masks, including how to wash and change masks every day.

"Lastly, long holidays always increase the number of cases significantly based on the experience of the Eid al-Adha holiday, Islamic New Year, Prophet's Birthday, and Christmas and New Year. Therefore, if the pandemic situation is still not under control, then the Chinese New Year holiday (February 12, 2021) can be considered to be postponed," he explained again.

After giving his direction, Coordinating Minister Luhut gave the opportunity to deliver a presentation to the Indonesian Minister of Health, Indonesian Minister of Home Affairs, Indonesian Minister of Religion, Indonesian Attorney General, Indonesian Chief of Police, TNI Commander, DKI Governor, West Java Governor, Central Java Governor, East Java Governor, and Bali Governor.

The Malang City Forkopimda who attended the coordination meeting were the Mayor of Malang Drs. H. Sutiaji, Dandim 0833 Malang City Lieutenant Colonel Arm Ferdian Primadhona, Danrem 083 Malang City Colonel Inf Irwan Subekti, Malang City Police Chief Senior Commissioner Leonardus Harapantua Simarmata Permata.
