Head of UDD PMI Malang City, dr, Eny Sekar Rengganingati, MM explained the importance of blood donation procedures

Although it may seem simple, explained Dr. Eny, this is very important to understand so that PMI will get clean, healthy blood that meets standards. The blood donation procedures in question include preparation, registration, donor selection, blood collection, and recovery. The importance of preparation, explained the woman in the hijab, is to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and the preparation includes temperature measurement, washing hands, and filling out the Covid-19 early detection form.

"Temperature measurement to detect early signs of someone's infection and a normal temperature is 36,5 to 37,5 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, washing hands must be done with running water, soap and hand sanitizer to eliminate germs. From the form filled out, to detect whether the donor is exposed to the virus or not, whether the donor has ever been to a crowd, and whether they have had contact with people exposed to Covid-19," added Dr. Eny.

The former Head of the Malang City Health Service added that registration is to find out the identity of the donor or prospective donor, to find out the health condition when going to the UDD, the history of health/chronic diseases suffered, medical procedures that have been undergone such as tooth extraction, major surgery, and immunizations.

He further said, other anticipation for donors is to undergo activities at risk of contracting blood-borne infections (BTIs). Such as related to the use of non-sterile needles, tattoos, piercings, having relations with people at high risk of suffering from BTIs (CSWs, people with sexual disorders or gays, transvestites, CSWs who use drugs), and whether they have multiple partners.

"In addition, the donor has ever lived in an endemic area of a particular disease (mad cow disease in Europe, malaria in tropical countries). There are two ways to register a donor, namely manually by filling out a registration form, using a computer and using an android and iphone application," explained Dr. Eny.
Donor selection is done, he said, to evaluate health data written on the donor selection form and a simple health check is carried out for blood pressure, temperature, hemoglobin. Later it will be confirmed whether or not they pass.

"If you have passed, blood will be taken directly. At PMI Malang City, the personnel are qualified, the equipment is sterile and calibrated, and the method is in accordance with the SOP that has been checked by BPOM," he explained.

Meanwhile, for recovery, dr. Eny explained, to monitor unwanted effects, give the body a chance to adjust by drinking replacement fluids, eating snacks and taking a 10-minute break. "All blood donation procedures must be carried out step by step so that the blood from the donor does not trigger new problems," he concluded. (say/ram)
