Mayor Sutiaji: Malang City is a Warehouse of Startups

Malang, (malangkota.go.id) – The Malang City Government (Pemkot) continues to strengthen its commitment to the creative economy (ekraf), especially the application and game subsector. Malang Mayor Drs. H. Sutiaji said that the creative potential of Malang City as a warehouse of startups will automatically have a positive impact on strengthening the economy.

He conveyed this while attending the Techibtion event - Support for Economic Recovery During the Pandemic through Creative Economy Development at the Atria Hotel, Saturday (22/1/2022). Techibition is a game and application exhibition for developers, publishers, and startups organized by the Bank Indonesia Malang Representative Office in the form of local games and startups. The goal is to be able to develop quickly following trends and compete at the global level.

"Malang will become Indonesia's Silicon Valley. In an official meeting with the governor and regional heads of East Java Province, the President once said that Malang will become a barometer for Indonesian applications and games," said Sutiaji.

This is a challenge for the young people of Malang City or commonly called Singo Edan. Sutiaji challenged the young people to show the craziness of the young people in Malang City to build Indonesia. Moreover, here the greeting is one soul, one soul of Indonesia.

Sutiaji added, currently startups in Malang City are more than 128 from the application and game sector. Malang City's roadmap in the creative economy in 2022 and 2023 is Malang going global. The Malang City Government will continue to collaborate with various parties to build a good ecosystem. He hopes that the community and ecosystem that have been built well will be further strengthened together in the future.

"Proof of our commitment, in the future we have an extraordinary project. We are building the Malang Creative Center (MCC) which in the future will belong to all of you. Because the building design and even the detailed engineering design (DED) are all from our community friends. God willing, this year it will be completed, so that in 2023 it can be fully used by our community friends, especially in the application and game sectors," he explained.

Sutiaji also expressed his appreciation and gratitude to Bank Indonesia which continues to encourage creative economy in Malang City. According to him, Malang City is currently a hexa helix, because banking also oversees how economic growth in the Arema land. Of course, in its realization there are obstacles. However, he said, if the ecosystem is built well, the obstacles can be resolved. With the hope that in the future it can bring in buyers and funders who can fund startups in Malang City.

"More than 13 universities in Malang City and six universities outside Malang City have created a curriculum. So academics collaborate with the community and government. Later, something like this can reduce unemployment in Malang City. So, we become actors in Indonesia, not just spectators," he added.

This activity will take place from January 22-23, 2022, and will be held in a hybrid manner to become a gathering place for startup industry players. In addition, this activity aims to encourage the digital creative industry by providing a stage for talents and startup players in Malang City. So that they can access funding and increase target users. This event was also attended by 20 startups from Malang City. (eka/ram)
