Treatment for cattle infected with FMD in Pisang Candi Subdistrict, Malang City

Veterinary Medical Officer of Malang City Agriculture and Livestock Service, drh. David Cahya Putra revealed that since the beginning when FMD cases emerged, his party had conducted surveillance when FMD cases entered East Java. Since the cases were found, the team from Malang City Agriculture and Livestock Service immediately went to places where there were livestock at high risk of contracting FMD.

"When it has happened, the term Malang City is infected, we take preventive measures, one of which is providing disinfectants, we have socialized the community regarding FMD disease. Then we provide treatment," explained David.

David added that the treatment was carried out simultaneously by the East Java Provincial Animal Husbandry Service in collaboration with districts/cities to carry out mass treatment simultaneously.

"So, from the districts/cities that were infected, they underwent treatment, one of which was in Malang City, undergoing treatment in Pisang Candi Village," said David.

If it has been infected because the disease is a virus, there is no cure. The virus causes wounds or secondary infections, such as bacteria growing. "Finally we provide appropriate action. Actions that can be taken are giving anti-inflammatories, anti-inflammatories, antibiotics and multivitamins to increase the body's resistance," explained David.

In addition, to stop the transmission of FMD, disinfectant spraying, cleaning of pens, and cleaning of wounds are also carried out. Where usually wounds in cows are found in the mouth or around the mouth or on the soles.
Transmission can actually be direct contact, that's why it was also conveyed that FMD is very fast-spreading and its prevalence can be 100 percent of the population. "So if one person is infected, it is very likely that the entire cage will also be infected," said David.

The transmission can be direct contact and through the air, so the transmission is very fast. The signs that are easy to recognize early on being infected with FMD, such as symptoms of mild fever and not wanting to eat.

Especially in the mouth, excess saliva comes out, because there is a wound in the oral cavity. So the saliva comes out very much. There is probably foam, because of the fever. "The sound of check check check at the beginning like that. After that the cattle do not want to eat and there are wounds in the gaps between the hooves. So the cow hurts when standing, worse when the hooves come off," said David.

The owner of the cow in Pisang Candi Village, Sodikin, said that the cows kept in his pen were initially infected with FMD because he brought in new cows. Fortunately, after receiving treatment and assistance from the Malang City Agriculture and Food Security Agency, the cows he keeps are currently in better condition.

"Of the eight cows I raise, three have been attacked by FMD, two are in good condition and only one is still having difficulty eating. But now it has been handled well," said Sodikin. (cah/ram)
