Textile Craft Exhibition titled Julang to appreciate textile crafts made by people with disabilities

Fikrah Ryanda Saputra, the pioneer of Hamparan Rintik who is also the initiator of this event, said that this is the second time Jelang Julang has been held. “Jelang means to welcome, julang means high. This exhibition is held to appreciate textile craft artisans and foster optimism to continue working. This exhibition is held to welcome high hopes for fellow artisans. Last year we collaborated with fabric artisans from Malang City and Malang Regency. Now we are collaborating with fellow artisans with disabilities,” said the man who is familiarly called Fiko, Friday (30/9/2022).

"This time there are 25 participants who participated in the fabric exhibition. And all of them are people with disabilities. With this exhibition, it is hoped that it can be an opportunity for friends to develop, sustainably by moving together," he said.

Fiko further said that for the pre-event of this exhibition, a series of batik trainings have been held for the disabled. "We have been doing training since four months ago. The theme of the product is Kriya Gembira, so it must be full color. In general, there are three techniques used, namely ecoprint, shibori, and batik with a brush because it is easier for friends with disabilities," he said.

Fiko said that after the training, the products of the disabled were collected and sold. The proceeds from the sales were used to hold trainings that were initially funded by several donors. In conjunction with this exhibition, various events, workshops, and classes involving the disabled were also held. Like this afternoon, a storytelling performance was held by the Deaf Mendongeng Community.

For information, Hamparan Rintik is a fashion brand that produces shibori, batik, and ecoprint fabrics in Malang City. While Omah Gembira is a volunteer community that cares about people with disabilities.
