Malang City BPBD's Steps to Anticipate Disasters

Malang, (malangkota.go.id) – In the last few days, Malang City has been hit by heavy rain. Regarding this condition, the local Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has taken various anticipatory measures by alerting officers. A number of volunteer teams such as the Rapid Reaction Team, Indonesian Red Cross, Resilient Village Team and Community Protection Team (Linmas) have also been advised to be vigilant.

Likewise from the ranks of the TNI-Polri so that if a disaster or emergency situation occurs, the handling is more intensive. Because so far the TNI-Polri team sometimes creates its own team and carries out executions in the field. With synchronization and collaboration, the results will be more optimal.

These are some of the things conveyed by the Head of the Malang City BPBD, Prayitno on Wednesday (12/10/2022). Communication via WhatsApp groups and handy talkies regarding weather developments, he said, has begun to be intensified to anticipate various possibilities.

Because, when the rain falls with high intensity, several areas in Malang City are prone to flooding and landslides. "Mitigation and mapping of disaster-prone areas by referring to previous disasters that have occurred have also been carried out for similar incidents to occur again," added Prayitno.

Of the five sub-districts in this city, he explained, on average they have disaster-prone points, especially for residents living in river basins. One of the concerns of officers is when floods come at night when residents are sleeping, so officers from the tough urban village team and the community protection team are on standby at night in their respective areas.

"However, residents are also advised to always be vigilant and immediately provide information to officers if there is a potential disaster. This is to minimize the risk that will occur at any time," explained Prayitno.

"We with the existing BPBD team composition always update weather developments, both national and regional. From here, the extreme ones can also be read, so the village heads, sub-district heads, and tough villages have monitored this. We hope that all locations that were previously reported to have very high vulnerability, we ask to be vigilant," he said.

Prayitno added, then the second stage, all volunteers this week will be gathered for mitigation and mapping and planning of steps. "We hope that later there will be coordination with the main westernmost sub-district or those bordering Batu City to monitor the water surface discharge in the area at all times," he explained.

Prayitno said, in this case because the position or geographical location of Malang City is lower than Batu City, so if there is heavy rain in Batu City that causes flash floods, it will have an impact on Malang City. "Another anticipation of officers is fallen trees, because when there is heavy rain it is sometimes followed by strong winds. We are also intensifying communication with the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) at the national and regional levels," he concluded. (say/ram)
