Malang City Government Plans Traffic Engineering in Kayutangan Area

Malang, (malangkota.go.id) – Malang City area has been designed to be a heritage tourism icon. It is inevitable that the high enthusiasm and activity in this area will be even higher. To prevent congestion and parking on the roadside (on-street parking), then appropriate traffic management and engineering are needed. In anticipation of this, the Malang City Government together with the Traffic Forum are finalizing this plan by inviting all parties to contribute suggestions through the Traffic and Road Transportation Forum Meeting, Monday (12/12/2022).

Mayor of Malang, Drs. H. Sutiaji at the Traffic and Road Transportation Forum Meeting at the Ijen Suites Resort & Convention Malang Hotel, Monday (12/12/2022).

The Mayor of Malang, Drs. H. Sutiaji said that there are two approaches related to smooth traffic, namely infrastructure and superstructure or engineering management. Currently, what the Malang City Government is trying to do is the superstructure. Mayor Sutiaji requested that there be immediate traffic engineering to overcome congestion in the Kayutangan area.

"I instructed how to maintain smooth transportation. This is the law of nature, it is impossible for the more people, the more vehicles do not increase. But as little as possible so that Malang does not become congested," said Mayor Sutiaji.

Head of the Malang City Transportation Agency (Dishub), Drs. R. Widjaja Saleh Putra said that the study on the development of the Kayutangan area had begun since 2019. It has been almost 3 years while ongoing reviews have been carried out by experts.

"As the arrangement of corridors 1, 2, and 3 in the Kayutangan area has been completed. Also, the increasing number of visits from people both from Malang and from outside. This has caused increasing traffic flow and parking needs in the area. So, like it or not, traffic engineering efforts must be carried out. It is hoped that in early 2023 a trial will be carried out," he said.

The Malang City Transportation Agency has found several problems. First, there is a queue of vehicles at the PLN intersection from the south. In addition, the distance between the Rajabali intersection and the PLN intersection is close (180 meters). So that it often causes vehicle queues. The volume of vehicles passing through the Rajabali intersection is also quite high with a saturation level (DS intersection) of more than 1,0.

The team has also taken several steps to find a solution to the problem. Surveys at 17 intersection locations have been carried out. Then, an analysis of each intersection and road section was carried out. After that, a traffic engineering plan/scenario was prepared and later an analysis of the performance of each engineering will be carried out.

Widjaja said that his party had discussed the traffic management plan in the Kayutangan area. “Finally, the best scenario emerged in our opinion. However, it still requires time for testing. We have not implemented this yet. So we need input from the traffic forum on what we have prepared in a small forum some time ago,” said Jaya.

Some of the planned traffic management and engineering scenarios are implementing one-way along Jalan Basuki Rahmat, from the north (PLN) to the south (Rajabali) and from the south (Toko Oen) to the north (Rajabali). In addition, Jalan Semeru (east side) from Rajabali to the west to Pizza Hut Bromo is also implemented as one-way. Meanwhile, for Jalan Bromo, one-way applies from the south (Bank Permata) to the north (Jalan Buring). One-way is also implemented along Jalan BS Riyadi from the west to the east. The one-way policy is also planned to be implemented on several other roads connecting several areas with the Kayutangan area.

Meanwhile, related to parking in the Kayutangan area, it is prepared on the east side with only one row. Jaya said that if the one-way implementation has been running on Jalan Basuki Rahmat without any reduction for parking, of course the road will be very wide for traffic activities. "If the side for parking is not reduced, the speed of vehicles will likely be very fast. Can step on the gas. So what has been parking on the west and east sides will be made one on the east side," he said. (ari/ram)
