Egg and Chicken Prices Affect Malang City Inflation This Month

Breadfruit (malangkota.go.id) – The increasing prices of eggs and chicken meat contributed to the inflation rate in Malang City in May 2023. Both commodities increased by 8,59% for eggs and 4,85% for chicken meat when compared to the previous month's inflation rate. This was explained by the Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Malang City, Erny Fatma Setyoharini, in an official release conducted virtually, Monday (5/6/2023).

The cause of the increase in the prices of the two commodities according to Erny is generally due to the increase in the price of animal feed and also a decrease in production. In addition, the post-Eid situation also played a role in the increase in the prices of the two commodities.

"There is an increase in production costs which includes an increase in feed prices, so it also affects the price of eggs and chicken meat," he explained.

Unlike eggs and chicken meat, red chili and cayenne pepper commodities, rice, and air and travel rates experienced price decreases. The price decrease for red chili and rice commodities was influenced by the main harvest that occurred in April 2023, so the stock of both commodities is relatively safe.

In a release issued by BPS Malang City, it was stated that all cities/regencies in East Java experienced inflation in May 2023. The highest inflation occurred in Sumenep Regency with a Year to Year inflation rate of 5,44% and Month to Month of 0,66%. Meanwhile, Madiun Regency experienced the lowest inflation rate with a Year to Year inflation rate of 3,85% and 0,07% for Month to Month inflation.

"On a month-to-month basis, the highest inflation contribution is in the food, beverage and tobacco group at 1,05% with an inflation contribution of 0,2413%," he explained.

In its development, the Year on Year inflation rate in May 2023 against May 2022 in Malang City of 4,22% is below East Java with a figure of 5,02%, but slightly above the Year on Year inflation rate of 4,00%. Meanwhile, for the Month to Month inflation rate, Malang City reached 0,25% which is higher than the East Java and National inflation rates.

In addition to the price changes that occurred in several commodities, Erny also reminded that a number of things were also noted that could affect the development of inflation in Malang City in May.

"Some of the notes of the event include high waves that occurred in Indonesian waters, rainfall that is generally in the low-medium criteria, fuel price adjustments, and Bank Indonesia's efforts to maintain the BI 7-Day Reverse Repo Rate (BI7DRR) at 5,75% since January 19, 2023," he concluded.
