Starfruit (malangkota.go.id) – The Department of Agriculture and Food Security (Dispangtan) of Malang City has prepared various efforts to mitigate the potential impacts of El-Nino (a phenomenon of warming temperatures) which is currently entering the dry season. One of the steps that has been prepared is to ensure the smooth supply of water from upstream to the rice fields. For this reason, repairs are currently being made to the tertiary irrigation network channels.
This was conveyed by the Head of the Malang City Dispangtan, Slamet Husnan, Tuesday (27/6/2023). He added that the plan is that later on, drilled wells will also be made to increase the water supply needed. Then, they will also work together with farmer groups in arranging planting times so that water needs can be met properly.
"This is done to regulate water use efficiently. Then, in terms of rice production, in Malang City itself it is currently relatively safe. Moreover, within a period of one year, agriculture in Malang City is able to plant rice 2,5 times," he added.
For rice production, Husnan said it is still relatively safe. Of course this provides certainty that rice production in Malang City can be maintained properly. On the other hand, the Deputy Minister of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia, Jerry Sambuaga, has also given his response regarding the anticipation of the potential for El-Nino in Indonesia.
He said that anticipatory preparations have been made by various ministries and related institutions, including local governments. "Cross-sector cooperation is key to ensuring that the impact of El-Nino does not affect other sectors, including the trade and supply of basic necessities," said Deputy Minister Jerry.
Not only that, he also emphasized that currently the supply of basic necessities in the market is still safe and under control. Through routine monitoring carried out by his party, the availability of basic necessities can be ensured to be stable, although there are relatively small price fluctuations. (say/yon)
