Kedungkandang (malangkota.go.id) – Welcoming the Islamic New Year 1 Muharram 1445 Hijriah and the Javanese New Year 1 Sura 1957, the people of Madyopuro, Malang City held the Mbabar Mbubur Suro ritual in the Ki Ageng Gribig Malang cemetery area, Wednesday (19/7/2023).

Driven by the Gribig Religi Village (KGR) Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis), various activities were carried out, starting from a tumpeng parade to making sura porridge which was carried out together.

The Head of Pokdarwis KGR, Devi Arif, said that the Mbabar Mbubur Suro ritual is a joint activity of Madyopuro residents to make Sura porridge which is carried out cooperatively to then be given as alms to residents and visitors to the Ki Ageng Gribig cemetery. "This activity is a mapak activity (Javanese for welcoming) the presence of the Sura Month as well as a form of gratitude for the gifts of God Almighty," explained Devi, Wednesday (19/7/2023).

This joint activity is intended by the Madyopuro community to cleanse themselves in the month of Sura. Bubur Sura is rice porridge which is then topped with omelettes and fried tempeh chili sauce, long beans and also spices. "The combination of all these ingredients makes bubur Sura savory, salty, spicy and sweet like the journey of human life which is full of dynamics," explained Devi.

Devi admitted that the Mbabar Mbubur Suro ritual is one of the missions to preserve culture and develop tourism in the Ki Ageng Gribig cemetery complex. She revealed that Pokdarwis KGR has approximately six activity programs in one year, including Mbabar Mbubur Suro. "To make it easier to remember, this activity ritual is called Mbabar Mbubur Suro," said Devi.

This activity has been started around 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic with the intention of having another attraction that makes religious tourism objects continue to run and continue to exist and be sustainable until today. "The main motivation is that visitors who come to the Ki Ageng Gribig cemetery during Sura can taste jenang sura or bubur sura together which is indeed made by the community around the tomb," explained Devi.

Furthermore, Devi said that bubur sura itself has the meaning of hope to live the new year with a white and clean heart. "Simply put, jenang sura with its white character hopes that this is the beginning of the year, this is the beginning of hope, the beginning of prayer, and we as Javanese should think positively. The hope is that in the next year what we get, and the blessings given by Allah SWT are all good," concluded Devi. (cah/yon)
