Anticipating the Impact of El Nino, President Jokowi Instructs to Increase Cheap Markets

Klojen (malangkota.go.id) – Anticipating the El Nino phenomenon, the impact of which is generally dry conditions and reduced rainfall, the President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo (Jokowi) instructed local governments to often hold People's Markets. He emphasized this considering that El Nino also has an impact on food and health disruptions.

This was conveyed by President Jokowi during his visit to the People's Market at Rampal Field, Malang City, Monday (24/7/2023). Also present on this occasion were Minister of SOEs Erick Thohir, Minister of Defense Prabowo Subianto, Governor of East Java Khofifah Indar Parawansa and Mayor of Malang Sutiaji.

The presence of the number one person in Indonesia along with the Minister of SOEs, the Minister of Defense and the Mayor of Malang also received an enthusiastic welcome from the community. Thousands of people crowded the event which was also combined with the receipt of basic food packages.

President Jokowi said that the People's Market is the government's effort to maintain economic stability and food availability. Especially to deal with the potential for El Nino which causes drought which is estimated to peak in August 2023.

"I have ordered BUMN, as well as Governors, Regents, and Mayors to hold as many cheap markets as possible," said President Jokowi, Monday (24/7/2023).

President Jokowi expressed his hope that related parties can immediately take steps to anticipate the El Nino phenomenon. Including the provision of basic food assistance if possible to be strengthened, because now we are facing a climate that he said could have an impact on health and food problems.

The President said the government now has data on which regions need it and which do not. "That way we are ahead of the curve, so when El Nino comes, we are ready," he explained.

The People's Market at Rampal Field is an activity initiated by Bank Mandiri and BRI which are State-Owned Enterprises. This People's Market aims to help improve the welfare of the people of Malang City by distributing 3.000 basic food packages consisting of 5 kg of rice, 1 liter of cooking oil and 1 kg of granulated sugar.
