Welcoming Independence Day, Red and White Flags Fly Along Ijen Boulevard

Klojen (malangkota.go.id) – More than 300 Red and White flags were installed in the Ijen Boulevard area of Malang City, Tuesday (15/8/2023). This number has increased from the previous year in the same location which amounted to around 200 flags. The installation of flags by the state civil apparatus (ASN) of Klojen District was to welcome and enliven the 78th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia.

Klojen Sub-district Head Drs. Heri Sunarko while attending the installation of the Red and White flag on Jalan Ijen

Klojen Sub-district Head Drs. Heri Sunarko, M.Si said that the activity of installing the Red and White flag on Jalan Ijen is an annual routine agenda ahead of Indonesian Independence Day which began in 2021. He said that initially he felt that Jalan Ijen looked deserted during the celebration of Indonesian Independence Day, even though according to him, Jalan Ijen is an area rich in historical value.

Departing from this, finally the initiative to enliven the Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia by installing flags to whiten Jalan Ijen emerged. "So I worked together with my friends, the village head and all ASN in Klojen District, we have a kind of obligation to whiten Jalan Ijen," he explained

Heri added that there were three reasons why Jalan Ijen was chosen as the location for the flag installation. He said that the most important thing was that the Ijen Boulevard area was an area full of historical value and had become an icon. One of them was Jalan Salak, or what is now better known as Jalan Pahlawan TRIP, which was the battleground between the student soldiers in Malang City and the Dutch colonialists. The second was the Brawijaya Museum, which witnessed the history of independence.

In addition, Heri also saw that the Ijen area is included in the center of Malang City, which is a tourist destination in Malang City, so that the excitement of Red and White can increase the attraction of the Jalan Ijen area.

Heri also said that this activity was a form of gratitude and gratitude to God Almighty for the gift of independence, as well as thanks to the heroes who had fought to realize independence, as well as a form of ASN's responsibility in maintaining the spirit of independence.

"One of the duties of ASN is to preserve and maintain the values of independence. Is it really hard as an ASN to raise the flag once a year, even though every month they receive welfare from the people," he said.

In the future, Heri hopes that this activity can continue to be preserved by his successors. In addition, he also hopes that this activity is not only carried out by Klojen District, but also by other areas and regional apparatuses within the Malang City Government (Pemkot).

"Hopefully this will also be a trigger for the other four sub-districts. It would be great if it was done by all sub-districts, we would redden every inch of land in Malang City," he concluded enthusiastically. (iu/yon)
