New Academic Year, Higher Education Becomes One of the Triggers of Inflation

Breadfruit (malangkota.go.id) – The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Malang City recorded an inflation rate in Malang City of 0,07 percent (m-to-m). The education group still has a major role in inflation in Malang City. This was conveyed by the Head of the BPS Malang City Distribution Statistics Team, Dwi Handayani, in the Official Statistics News (BRS), Friday (1/9/2023).

"For inflation in Malang City, it is still low compared to East Java which reached 0,11 percent. However, it is higher than the national which experienced deflation of 0,02 percent. In East Java, the highest inflation was experienced by Sumenep at 0,16 percent and the lowest inflation was experienced by Madiun at 0,02 percent," he said.

Dwi explained that in August 2023, rice commodities were recorded as the biggest trigger for inflation. Rice commodities contributed 0,08 percent with a price increase of 2,5 percent.

However, BPS also noted that like July 2023, the education group had a large share in inflation. If in July elementary school education experienced an increase, in August 2023 higher education, namely academies and universities, was one of the triggers of inflation. The increase in education costs of 1,37 percent contributed 0,04 percent to inflation. "Malang City inflation was driven by two commodities, namely rice and education costs," he said.

The increase in higher education costs is due to the fact that Malang City, as a study destination, starts the academic year in August. In addition, several campuses are still opening several new student admission pathways by imposing tuition fees of varying values.

In this BRS, Dwi also mentioned several commodities that experienced price declines that caused deflation. Several commodities that had a major role in inhibiting inflation were broiler chicken meat which dropped in price by 6,9 percent, shallots 19,88 percent, broiler chicken eggs dropped by 4,94 percent, cooking oil 2,08 percent, garlic 4,46 percent, and red chilies 5,99 percent.
