Fish and Vegetable Cultivation Using Aquaponic Methods in Limited Land

Lowokwaru (malangkota.go.id) – Utilizing every inch of land he owns, a resident of Jl Kanjuruhan no. 44B Tlogomas Malang City, Abdul Ghofur, has an interesting breakthrough by developing a fish and vegetable intercropping system.

Abdul Ghofur, the owner of Al Ghifari Farm, said that he is currently developing fish and vegetable cultivation with an aquaponic system. The fish being cultivated are tilapia, while the vegetables being cultivated are quite diverse, ranging from kale, Brazilian spinach, mustard greens, siomak and pakcoy.

"For water spinach, planting it once in an aquaponic system can yield results forever. Because when harvesting water spinach, it is not pulled out, but simply cut," explained Ghofur, Tuesday (3/10).

Ghofur said, he deliberately developed the aquaponics system after previously using a chamber for filtration of tilapia ponds. It turned out that when using the chamber every two days had to be cleaned so it was very draining.

"With the aquaponics system, there is no need to bother cleaning the chamber, in fact, fish waste can become nutrients for plants planted in the fish pond," said Ghofur.

He added that the advantage of using the aquaponic system is that the plants are really healthy without the help of chemical fertilizers. According to him, this is very profitable because you can harvest vegetables with good quality organically.

Meanwhile, for the selection of fish species, tilapia was deliberately chosen because this type of fish likes water flow with a fountain. With the system currently being developed, Ghofur admits that the development of the tilapia he cultivates is very good. Within six months of hatching, the tilapia that is cultivated can be harvested and is ready to be consumed.

In addition to tilapia fish farming, the aquaponics system is also very good for tilapia seeding. For that, in addition to tilapia fish farming, in his current place he is also seriously developing fish seeding with the aquaponics method. (cah/yon)
