Strengthening the Urban Farming Ecosystem in Malang City

Klojen (malangkota.go.id) – The agricultural system by utilizing limited land in the middle of densely populated settlements or commonly called urban farming is one of the solutions of Malang City in terms of food security and can increase the economic income of the community. In addition, with a modern agricultural system, such as hydroponics, it is also useful for suppressing global warming.

This was conveyed by the Acting Mayor of Malang, Dr. Ir. Wahyu Hidayat, MM after the Inauguration of the Urban Farming Ecosystem in Samaan Village, which is a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) from BRI Malang Regional Office, Saturday (7/10/2023). This CSR worth IDR 225 million was implemented in RW 1, Samaan Village, Klojen District and was labeled 'Kampung Palm Eco Greenvillage'.

From this village, Wahyu said it will be able to improve the community's economy and can reduce the current temperature warming. In the future, he also hopes that similar villages will emerge and invite third party participation to realize empowerment programs like this.

"From urban farming, besides the results we will get later, the most important thing is that in the middle of the city's density with the air that is currently not good, there are green plants that can neutralize pollution. Hopefully, this program can neutralize so that the weather can return to being cool. Through this program, besides the results, food security can also be maintained," he explained.

Regarding this program, BRI Malang Regional CEO, Mohamad Suratin revealed that if possible, his party plans to develop similar villages in other sub-districts. In addition, his party will also help market agricultural and livestock products produced by residents.

"So in addition to empowerment, marketing for its products including later supporting programs will be sustainable for this CSR program. Concretely we do not only help empowerment physically but also follow-up of the empowerment," he said.

This urban farming program will also be intensified by the Malang City Government, so that various needs of residents such as vegetables, fruits and fish will be met. In addition, the use of land in the middle of dense settlements can produce oxygen and minimize the impact of El Nino. (say/yon)
