Be Careful, Logging Into Wi-Fi Randomly Can Have Fatal Consequences

Lowokwaru (malangkota.go.id) – In the digitalization era like today, all human financial activities are increasingly integrated. Starting from bank accounts, credit cards, to digital wallets. All of this financial information is prone to being an attractive target for cybercriminals.

UMM Lecturer Denar Regata Akbi

Lecturer of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) Ir. Denar Regata Akbi, S.Kom, M.Kom, Monday (31/10/2023) discussed several important aspects that need to be considered to improve cybersecurity in digital accounts or wallets.

One of the main threats to cybersecurity in digital wallets is web phishing attacks. Usually, this web phishing is done by sending a link. Through this fake link, they try to get confidential information such as passwords or other data to break into and gain access to the financial application in question.

"Phishing is usually done on the web or in email. The attacker tricks the user by sending a link that is almost exactly the same. So they sometimes only change the upper and lower case letters in the URL, but the user often doesn't pay attention to that detail. So we immediately click and are redirected to the wrong website," said the Informatics Engineering lecturer.

On the other hand, cybersecurity attacks also involve social tactics known as social engineering. Cybercriminals use psychological manipulation to obtain confidential information. Denar said that social engineering can make users submit various personal information. Therefore, he reminded people to always be wary of people who ask for confidential information via telephone, email or text message.

Another way that is usually done by the perpetrators can also be through hotspot or Wi-Fi services. Moreover, users also do not know what the security perimeter is like. So when someone connects their device to a random Wi-Fi or hotspot network and opens internet banking or m-banking, of course this will be very risky to attack. "Suddenly the malware has entered and can take important information and finally the m-banking is hacked," he said.

Denar also suggests being careful in downloading applications on the App Store or Play Store. Make sure that the application is credible and trusted. Likewise, by activating strong security features, such as two-factor authentication.

According to him, it is important to understand that there is no security system that is truly capable. Everyone certainly needs more vigilance to deal with this. Denar again advised the public to always have a sense of caution and be suspicious of things that look strange and unnatural.

"In addition to being careful not to be fooled by social tactics, we also should not log in to hotspots carelessly. Especially to the point of opening internet banking or other digital wallets. No less important, try not to save passwords on the internet. Using Google safe browsing to minimize the occurrence of things like this can also be done as protection," he concluded. (umm/say/yon)
