January 2024 Malang City Economy Experiences 0,23 Percent Deflation

Breadfruit (malangkota.go.id) – The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Malang City noted that in January 2024, the Malang City economy experienced month-to-month (m-to-m) deflation and year-to-date (y-to-d) deflation rates of 0,23 percent each.

"The main contributor to deflation in January 2024 was the food, beverage, and tobacco group with a deflation contribution of 0,144%. The commodities that contributed the most to deflation were cayenne pepper, air transportation, red chili, gasoline, and chicken eggs," explained the Head of BPS Malang City, Umar Sjaifudin, M.Si, Thursday (1/2/2024).

In the Official Statistics News (BRS) on the Development of the Consumer Price Index of Malang City in January 2024, the Head of BPS revealed that the deflation figures for Malang City m-to-m and y-to-d were deeper than those achieved by East Java and the nation. Likewise, for year-on-year (yoy) inflation, Malang City's achievement of 2,29 percent was lower than East Java's inflation of 2,47 percent and the nation's of 2,57.

"Of course this is the result of various efforts made by the Malang City Government together with TPID who innovated to suppress inflation rates. One of them is by holding the Mbois Ilakes Inflation Suppression Stall in several Malang City markets. It turns out that this effort is very visible in curbing the increase in commodity prices in the market," said Umar.

BPS noted several events that affected the inflation rate in Malang City in January 2024. Among them were the abundant production of cayenne pepper and red chili so that prices dropped drastically, even though previously chili had a major role as a trigger for inflation. In addition, there was also a decrease in airline ticket prices and adjustments to non-subsidized fuel prices as of January 1. Meanwhile, there was an increase in tomato prices due to limited supplies.

For your information, the calculation of inflation starting this year refers to the results of the 2022 Cost of Living Survey (SBH). Umar said that the SBH was carried out to obtain the weight of the consumption value which is the main foundation for the accuracy of inflation calculations.

"To maintain the accuracy of inflation data, the consumption value weight update is carried out periodically through SBH at least every five years. In addition, the expansion of the scope of the monitored area is an effort to strengthen and improve the quality of inflation data," he explained. (ari/yon)
