Not Just Playing, It's Important to Sharpen Gross Motor Skills in Children's Growth and Development

Lowokwaru (malangkota.go.id) – The Student Community Service Program (PMM) is a form of applying downstream research results and a mandatory activity carried out by students who are actively studying at University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM).

This activity is a form of student contribution by going directly to the community. One of them is the service of Group 19 Wave III which was carried out from January 19, 2024 to February 26, 2024.

Group 19 conducted PMM at the Siti Hajar Integrated Early Childhood Education (PAUD), Lowokwaru District, Malang City and was attended by approximately 40 children aged 3-5 years.

Head of Group 19, Sabrina Hanum S. said that this PMM is also a means for students to apply what they have learned to the community, namely regarding the development of fine and gross motor skills in pre-school children.

The development of fine and gross motor skills is an important thing that parents must pay attention to, especially gross motor skills. Gross motor skills themselves are body movements that predominantly use large muscles or all of their limbs, for example running, jumping, kicking, going up and down stairs, or others that make them move all of their limbs.

"Children who have mastered their gross motor skills will have a healthy body. In addition, children will be better able to socialize with their peers, train independence and increase self-confidence," explained Hanum.

From this, Group 19 finally designed a program to hone gross motor skills in pre-school children (3-6 years). There are various programs that have been prepared, including morning exercise, playing hopscotch, ball relay, cardboard relay and swimming, which are packaged with fun and enjoyable learning models.

From these programs that have been prepared, it is hoped that it can be known whether students have fulfilled the development stages according to their age, so that if a delay is detected, students can immediately receive appropriate treatment to support their motor development.

The members of Group 19 who carried out this activity were Sabrina Hanum S., Alifah Nur Sabria, Aninditha Ramadhanti S., Aisyah Tamira A., and Millatul Izzah W., who are students of the Psychology Study Program, University of Muhammadiyah Malang who were guided by Mrs. Sofa Amalia S.Psi, M.Psi, as the Field Supervisor (DPL).
