Lowokwaru (malangkota.go.id) – A total of 642 Taekwondo athletes from several regions in East Java took part in the championship at the Pertamina Sports Center (GOR), Brawijaya University (UB) Malang from 18-19 May 2024. The championship, which competed for the Acting Mayor of Malang Cup, was attended by athletes from Surabaya, Kediri, Blitar and Lumajang.
Acting Mayor of Malang Dr. Ir. Wahyu Hidayat, MM after opening the championship, Saturday (18/5/2024) said that this championship is a step to recruit classy athletes with a champion mentality. Enlivened by several traditional and modern dances, this Korean martial arts championship is also an effort to boost tourism through sporting events.
On the other hand, the number one person in the Malang City Government said that this event is also a means to measure and improve the abilities of Malang City Taekwondo athletes, so that they can later compete and achieve achievements at various championship levels, especially at the 2025 East Java Provincial Sports Week (Porprov) which will be held in Malang Raya.
"This championship is also a coaching event and also to measure the abilities that have been carried out by Taekwondo Malang City. Hopefully, this event can provide an experience for Malang City athletes to prepare for the next match," explained Wahyu.
Until now there are at least 16 Taekwondo clubs in Malang City, such as Lion Taekwondo, Petir Taekwondo and Arok Taekwondo. According to Wahyu, championships like this will be held routinely, especially for students so that later many tough and classy young athletes will be born. (say/yon)
