Dry Season, BPBD Warns of Two Fire-Prone Sub-districts

Kedungkandang (malangkota.go.id) – May 2024 is predicted to enter the dry season and its peak is estimated to be in July to August 2024. One of the potential disasters that needs to be anticipated in this season is fire. Given that the dry season is usually accompanied by strong winds, which can also trigger the movement of fire. the public is also advised to always be vigilant.

This was conveyed by the Head of the Malang City Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Prayitno, Monday (20/5/2024). According to him, although Malang City does not have forests, the existence of yards or fairly large areas of residents' land, such as bamboo forests (in Javanese called barongan) in large and dense quantities can potentially cause fires.

Prayitno said that such land is still widely found in Sukun and Kedungkandang sub-districts. In such areas, residents usually burn garbage, and sometimes they are careless and just left like that. Things like this can trigger fires and cause losses because the burning land can spread to residential areas.

Head of BPBD admitted that his party had taken anticipatory steps, namely coordinating with the infrastructure sector in each sub-district in the two districts. "We ask them to continue to provide education to the community regarding potential fire triggers. Including not throwing cigarette butts in areas that are prone to fire, such as trash cans and empty land," he continued.

Although the two sub-districts are prone to fires, according to Prayitno, it does not mean that his party does not take into account the other three sub-districts. His party continues to monitor and coordinate with the tough village team to anticipate various possibilities that can occur at any time. "By maintaining joint vigilance, any disaster can be suppressed and even prevented," he concluded. (say/yon)
