Ahead of Eid al-Adha, Increase in Commodity Prices Needs to be Anticipated

Wahyu Hidayat, MM together with the Malang City Regional Inflation Control Team (TPID) attended the 2024 Regional Inflation Control Coordination Meeting (Rakor) led by the Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian virtually at the Ngalam Command Center (NCC) Malang City Hall, Monday (10/6/2024).

The Minister of Home Affairs said that the inflation rate in Indonesia year on year is at 2,84 percent with the highest inflation contribution being the food, beverage, and tobacco group. With this figure, Indonesia is ranked 73rd lowest out of 186 countries in the world. Meanwhile, among the countries that are members of the G20, Indonesia is ranked 14th lowest out of 24 countries and ranked 6th lowest out of 11 ASEAN countries.

Furthermore, Tito said that month-to-month there was deflation. "The more important indicator is month-to-month inflation, this is the first time during our meeting that there was deflation of -0,03 percent from the previous 0,25 percent," said Tito.

Meanwhile, compared to the national inflation rate, East Java's yoy inflation rate is still lower at 2,83 percent. Acting Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti said that regencies/cities that experienced an increase in the Price Development Index (IPH) in the first week of June experienced a decrease compared to the previous week.

"Meanwhile, the number of districts/cities experiencing a decline in the Price Development Index (IPH) in the first week of June increased," he added.

Ahead of Eid al-Adha, there are several commodities that tend to experience price increases, namely red chilies, cayenne peppers, shallots, chicken eggs, and air transportation fares. Several of these commodities have also contributed to inflation in May 2024.

Meanwhile, based on the Market and Basic Needs Monitoring System (SP2KP) in the first week of June 2024, the food commodity that needs to be watched out for is cayenne pepper, which increased by 0,26 percent compared to May 2024. The number of districts/cities that experienced an increase in the price of cayenne pepper in the first week of June also increased quite significantly.

Meanwhile, red chilies increased by 1,46 percent, but the number of regions experiencing price increases decreased. The price of shallots showed a significant decline in the first week of June 2024. The prices of garlic, chicken eggs, and granulated sugar also experienced a slow decline. (ari/yul)
