Malang City Government's Commitment to Making the Elderly More Empowered

Klojen (malangkota.go.id) – The excitement of the National Elderly Day (HLUN) Commemoration is still felt in Malang City. The Malang City Government (Pemkot) through the Malang City Social Service, Women's Empowerment, Child Protection, Population Control, and Family Planning (Dinsos P3AP2KB) held the 28th HLUN Commemoration Peak at the Gajahmada Graha Hotel, Wednesday (18/9/2024).

A total of 224 elderly people who are members of various elderly communities in Malang City looked enthusiastic and happy. Various performances from the Paguyuban Lansia Santa Marta Malang City also added to the excitement of the event. It was clear that age did not dampen the enthusiasm of these elderly people to be active and creative.

Secretary of Dinsos P3AP2KB, Wahyu Setyawan, SE, S.Sos., MM revealed that the HLUN commemoration activity aims to increase the knowledge and understanding of the elderly to become prosperous, independent, and dignified elderly. Therefore, not only presenting entertainment but this activity is also a place to motivate the elderly by presenting Lestiyo Gunawan who is a motivator to strengthen the motivation of the elderly to be more empowered and continue to work.

Assistant for Government and Public Welfare of the Malang City Regional Secretariat Dr. Ida Ayu Made Wahyuni, SH, M.Si who was present representing the Acting Mayor of Malang said that in accordance with the theme of this year's HLUN commemoration, namely "Care for Elderly, Dignified Indonesia", the Malang City Government is committed to making the elderly in Malang City into resilient elderly. This activity is also expected to be an event to increase their role, as well as provide motivation to the elderly to provide support in every development program of Malang City.

"The existence of the elderly should not be seen as a burden, this elderly community group should be more recognized and their potential should be encouraged so that they can be healthy, active and independent," said Ida.

Malang City Government continues to strengthen efforts to improve access to services in every area of ​​life. Such as improving health services by developing programs to ensure that health services are more affordable and integrated for the elderly. In addition, the rantang kasih program which aims to provide food and beverage assistance for the elderly in need continues to run.

"Not only that, public infrastructure is also continuously being improved to ensure the safety and security of the elderly. Public infrastructure, such as parks, elderly-friendly sidewalks, and other public facilities, are designed with the needs of the elderly in mind. There is also a school program for the elderly which is a program implemented by the central government together with the Dinsos P3AP2KB of Malang City," he continued.

The percentage of the elderly in Malang City is currently 13,02 percent of the total population. This also indicates that life expectancy in Malang City has also increased and is at 73,75 years. "This can be an indicator of the success of social welfare development which can be seen from the increase in nutrition, good sanitation, progress in the medical field, health services, education and economic welfare," concluded Ida.
