Starfruit (malangkota.go.id) – Starting from the problem of waste in the school environment that is faced every day, SMP Negeri 30 Malang City innovated by developing Economic Compost Briquettes (Brikomek) based on a screw press. The innovation developed by the school located in Mulyorejo, Sukun District, was also exhibited at the Malang Creative Center (MCC), Monday (11/11/2024).
Teacher of SMPN 30 Malang City, Utari Dian Palupi revealed Brikomek is an innovation initiated by teacher of SMPN 30 Malang City, namely Supriadi. Brikomek is produced from processed organic waste which is converted into compost briquettes with a new formula that has economic value.
"The ingredients for making Brikomek are almost all free, starting from leaf waste, husks, and other organic waste, only starch is purchased as an adhesive," explained Utari, Monday (11/11/2024).
By being converted into briquettes, organic waste can become biomass fuel that has economic value and is environmentally friendly. The making is also quite easy, simply by mixing compost and starch with a certain ratio and molding using a press or compactor.
"Screw press, as a pressing tool used to print briquettes is a homemade product that is modified in such a way as to increase maximum and constant pressing power. After the briquettes are printed, they are then dried by drying them in the sun for approximately five days during sunny weather," he explained.
In more detail, Utari explained that Brikomek's innovation originated from a problem faced by the school, where the waste produced by SMPN 30 residents every day was quite high. When separated, organic and inorganic waste still overwhelmed the cleaning staff.
The school janitor's efforts to reduce the accumulation of garbage are by sorting and burning the rest. However, he said that this method of burning garbage can cause air pollution and the results of burning leave traces that damage the environment.
From that background, finally emerged the innovation of processing organic waste into Brikomek which is a development of composting. And currently the Brikomek innovation has been developed into a learning medium at SMPN 30. (cah/yon)
