Cross-Sector Community Service to Normalize the Flow of the Amprong River

Kedungkandang (malangkota.go.id) – As a disaster mitigation effort to anticipate further flooding, the ranks of the Malang City Government (Pemkot) together with the TNI-Polri, volunteers, and local residents worked together to clean up piles of garbage that clogged the flow of the Amprong River, Kedungkandang District, Friday (27/12/2024). This pile of garbage is one of the causes of the Amprong River overflowing into residential houses, Wednesday (25/12/2024).

Community service to clean up the Amprong River

Regional Secretary (Sekda) of Malang City, Erik Setyo Santoso, who directly inspected the area with the Dandim 0833 of Malang City, revealed that to handle this problem, his party has prepared a short-term, medium-term, and long-term post-flood handling action plan.

"For short-term handling, we focus on cleaning up the trash that is blocking the river flow. Given that the past few days have been raining quite heavily, this diverse trash must be cleaned up immediately so that it does not block the river flow and cause the river to overflow," he explained.

He added, for medium-term handling, an identification of infrastructure conditions in the river area will be carried out, such as bridges, roads on the right and left, retaining walls, and others. "We will ensure the condition of the infrastructure around the river, whether it is still feasible, needs to be strengthened or what. Therefore, I instruct the PUPRPKP Service to carry out identification and further handling steps," he explained.

Meanwhile, for long-term handling, Erik expressed the commitment of the Malang City Government to restore the function of the Amprong River. The steps taken are to periodically dredge river sediments so that there is no shallowing of the river which results in overflowing river water due to the inability to accommodate water.

To achieve the common goal of solving this flood problem, Erik emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation and collaboration of all parties, both government, community members, volunteers, and all elements to maintain environmental sustainability. (cah/yn)
