Tempe Sabar, From Caring About Trash to Giving Alms

Kedungkandang (malangkota.go.id) – The existence of the waste care community 'Tempe Sabar' which is an acronym for the Barokah Waste Sorting Place on Jalan KH Hasyim V RT 7 RW 3 Kelurahan Kedungkandang Kecamatan Kedungkandang deserves appreciation. The community, which was founded on August 14, 2022, apart from working socially, the proceeds from the sale of managed waste are donated to orphans, the poor and also cleaners.

Tempe Sabar Community activities when sorting waste and receiving garbage donations

The community initiated by Susianah Ita and her husband Joni Dwianto started from the concern of seeing a lot of garbage scattered around the house and the lack of public awareness in sorting the types of garbage. At that time, her husband said that when working on the land, he found a lot of garbage, especially plastic waste which made him need extra energy when working.

Finally, after discussing with her husband, Ita agreed to establish the 'Tempe Sabar' community. "Because at that time we had not found a concept for how to work, we collaborated with the Student Executive Board (BEM) of Brawijaya University Malang and finally found the concept of garbage charity," she explained on Wednesday (5/2/2025).

Over time, currently there are approximately 20 local residents who have joined. Although as a community that collects various types of waste, members of the Tempe Sabar community do not take the waste that is in the trash in general, but accept donations of waste from residents after the waste has been sorted according to type.

"In the first year of the community's establishment, residents who gave garbage alms were only in the RW 3 area of Kedungkandang Village. However, now it has spread to Lesanpuro, Madyopuro, Sukun Villages and even several areas in Malang Regency," explained the woman who is also a member of the Malang City Environmental Cadre.

In addition to being a form of concern for the environment, Ita said that through the Tempe Sabar Community, she also wants to educate the public about the importance of cleanliness and sorting waste based on its type, starting from plastic waste, paper, glass bottles and others. On the other hand, this 47-year-old woman wants the existence of the Tempe Sabar Community to be beneficial to others, especially for people who need a helping hand.

"Because many residents care and give garbage alms, my husband and other men now also collect garbage in several communal garbage places every Friday. For 20 months we have collected about 7,5 tons of garbage," Ita explained.

After the waste is sorted and neatly packed, it is then sold to middlemen or collectors and the results are 100 percent donated to charity. The charity given every six months varies in value, starting from Rp10 million-Rp20 million. (say/yn)
