Starfruit (malangkota.go.id) – The Jelang Julang #4 art exhibition of craft, textile and clothing products held at the 7th Floor Auditorium of the Malang Creative Center (MCC) Building for three days, from 11-13 February 2024, was also enlivened by art performances, workshops, and a bazaar. One of the things that caught our attention was the patchwork craft workshop with the Malang Patchwork and Quilts Community (Mapaquilt) hosted by Ortien Wahyu.

Ortien said Mapaquilt is a community engaged in patchwork art. Although patchwork is waste, in the right hands it can be transformed into works of artistic and economic value. "Today we share knowledge about simple patchwork art, namely making key chains," explained Ortien, Tuesday (11/2/2025).
The participants who attended the workshop this time were mostly children and students, so what was taught was simple patchwork art for introduction and fostering the soul of creativity using patchwork, dacron, needles and threads. He emphasized that the key to pursuing patchwork and quilting crafts is perseverance.
Ortien said that the Mapaquilt Community always has activities every week. He also invited children, mothers, and anyone who is interested in learning more about patchwork crafts to join and come directly. "We usually gather at Jl. Langsep Number 2 Malang City every Wednesday from 9-12 noon," explained Ortien.
Ortien further said that crafts from patchwork have good prospects and markets. From easily obtained materials, patchwork can be formed into bags, blankets, or other interesting crafts.
"The price of the product offered depends on the level of difficulty in making it. For example, blankets can cost 3-4 million rupiah, bags in the range of one hundred thousand rupiah, while key chains are between 10-25 thousand rupiah," said Ortien.
With this workshop, Ortien hopes that patchwork and quilting crafts can develop, become more popular, and more than that, can open up job opportunities and business opportunities in the community.
Meanwhile, the initiator of the Jelang Julang #4 event, Fikrah Ryanda Saputra, revealed that there were various series of events presented, one of which was a workshop with the Mapaquilt Community which exhibited works and also shared knowledge.
"We hope that by presenting a patchwork workshop in Jelang Julang #4, we can fulfill our desire to present a textile and clothing craft art exhibition to the public," said Fikrah. (cah/yn)
