Kedungkandang (malangkota.go.id) – Following up on public complaints regarding traffic accidents allegedly due to the lack of public street lighting due to being obstructed by dense trees and potholed roads, officers from the Malang City Environmental Service (DLH) and Malang City DPUPRKP responded quickly. As seen when officers cut down trees on Jl Ki Ageng Gribig, Lesanpuro, Kedungkandang District, Malang City, Friday (21/3/2025).

Malang Mayor Wahyu Hidayat directly inspecting the tree cutting in Lesanpuro

The complaint that was received on the social media account of Malang Mayor Wahyu Hidayat was followed up by directly reviewing the scene and taking action. From the observations made, Wahyu assessed that the lack of lighting was due to the condition of the public street lighting (PJU) which was covered by the dense leaves of the trees. "Actually it's bright, it's just covered by shady trees. Thank God, we've cut down what was covering the PJU," he said.

In addition to the condition of the PJU covered by trees, Wahyu assessed that the smooth road conditions with straight tracks tend to make drivers accelerate their vehicles high, so that the risk of traffic accidents is quite high, especially in dark conditions at night. Therefore, Wahyu also appealed to drivers to be careful when driving and obey traffic rules.

"An appeal to road users, remain careful when driving at night. The road is straight and smooth, with high speeds on average, so be careful because we don't know if there are people crossing," said the number one person in the Malang City Government.

Met separately, Head of Malang City DLH Noer Rahman Wijaya said that efforts to maintain trees in Malang City are continuing. Based on data, there are around 25.000 trees in Malang City that must be cared for and maintained every day. Currently, tree maintenance is carried out by 18 officers who are divided into three work teams based on work shifts.

Rahman said, every day the Malang City DLH receives dozens of complaints and requests from the public regarding tree cutting or pruning. Even so, he reminded that in maintaining trees, the Malang City DLH is also committed to paying attention to aspects of conservation and environmental ecosystems that must be maintained, so not all complaints will be responded to immediately.

"So we will review every complaint and application received to search based on priority scale, then determine the handling pattern, whether it is tree pruning or tree cutting," he explained.

Rahman also appealed and invited the community to play an active role in protecting trees in Malang City and not hesitate to report or submit a direct request to the Malang City Environmental Agency if they encounter trees in dangerous conditions.

"Please submit the complaint directly to DLH. God willing, we will follow up immediately," he concluded. (iu/yn)
