Klojen (malangkota.go.id) – The central government has planned the construction of People's Schools to improve the quality of education for the young generation of Indonesia. People's Schools are designed to be free boarding schools for children from underprivileged families. President Prabowo is targeting that these People's Schools can be started in the 2025/2026 school year.
The Malang City Government is also committed to realizing the People's School in Malang City. Malang Mayor Wahyu Hidayat said that his party has prepared building facilities in the Tlogowaru area to support this program.
"Malang City proposed that it be built on the former Poltekom campus. Yesterday, a team from the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Ministry of Public Works reviewed it. This is all for Malang City residents who are in poverty grades 1, 2, and 3. Hopefully, this can be implemented and can reduce the number of school dropouts, because the target is a thousand students," he said when met at Malang City Hall, Thursday (27/3/2025).
Wahyu said that President Prabowo hopes that in the 2025/2026 academic year, this program can be implemented, especially in areas that already have land and buildings ready, including for accommodation.
"So because of the system boarding school, they will stay there. For the levels starting from elementary school, junior high school, to high school. But which one will come first? Whether elementary school, junior high school, or high school will be regulated by the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Ministry of Education and Culture. How the teaching staff, the curriculum will be regulated by the center, but for the residents of Malang City," he continued.
Furthermore, Wahyu said that the central government has budgeted Rp100 billion for each location. Sekolah Rakyat will also finance all of its students' school needs, from uniforms, meals, dormitories, school supplies, and others.
With the concept of a boarding school without any fees, school children can get quality education. Graduates of this school are expected to not only excel academically, but also have a strong character that can then become agent of change to improve the welfare of his family.
"Most of them drop out of school because of economic problems, hopefully with this program the dropout rate can decrease. And with this program boarding school "This is an extraordinary result, because it has been tried," he concluded. (ari/yn)
