Government Officially Launches Subsidized Housing for Journalists

Jakarta, April 8, 2025 – The government shows its concern for journalists by presenting a program for affordable and habitable subsidized housing.

Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid stated that the housing subsidy program for journalists is a form of the state's commitment to answering the basic needs of journalists.

This program was initiated by the Ministry of Housing and Settlements (PKP) as a form of cross-sector synergy to ensure journalists have access to humane and affordable housing.

"We express our appreciation because we have been involved as journalists for 10 years, that not all journalists are prosperous, not all journalists have access to affordable housing financing and not all journalists can live with good standards of eligibility," said Meutya in a Press Conference on Support for Subsidized Housing for Journalists at the Ministry of PKP Office, Wisma Mandiri, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (8/4/2025).

Minister Meutya stated the importance of the program in order to support the profession of journalists as one of the pillars of democracy in Indonesia. Moreover, President Prabowo Subianto gives full attention to media crews.

"The Minister of PKP (Maruarar Sirait) earlier conveyed directly to Mr. Prabowo who then gave attention to the profession of journalists also needing to be involved in this subsidized housing program. Of course to support democratic work, work as the fourth pillar, a bridge between the government and its people," he explained.

More than just a housing assistance program, this cross-ministerial collaboration is a real symbol that the government values the profession of journalists as an important part of national development. Meutya Hafid emphasized that the Ministry of Communication and Digital will continue to facilitate coordination between stakeholders so that the program runs effectively.

"This profession is not only important, but also essential in maintaining democratic space. The welfare of journalists must be part of the country's strategic agenda. Not just a form of sympathy, but through real actions that can be felt directly," concluded Meutya.

The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Minister of PKP Maruarar Sirait and Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti is a concrete initial step in implementing the program designed across ministries and institutions, with an initial target of providing 1.000 subsidized housing units for journalists in various regions.

Minister of PKP Maruarar Sirait added that the initial launch of this program will be carried out on May 6, 2025. In the initial stage, 100 house keys will be handed over to selected journalists. He also emphasized the importance of transparency in the selection process, which will involve the Press Council and the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI).

"We recognize the challenges in determining recipient priorities, because there will certainly be more demand than available units. So we want to ensure that the selection is carried out objectively and on target," said Maruarar.

On the same occasion, BPS Head Amalia explained that her party had adjusted the criteria for program recipients to be more inclusive. Journalists domiciled in Jabodetabek with incomes of up to IDR 13 million (for those who are married) and IDR 11–12 million (for those who are single) can still access this subsidy.

"Initially we set an income limit of Rp7-8 million. However, after considering the field conditions and the importance of the role of journalists in society, we relaxed this limit. This is a step so that more journalists can feel the benefits of the program," said Amalia.

Through this program, the government hopes that Indonesian journalists can carry out their duties more calmly and productively, without having to continue to be burdened by basic problems such as housing. Because prosperous journalists are a strong foundation for a healthy democracy.
