Supporting President Prabowo's Priority Program, Malang City is Ready to Realize People's Schools

Jakarta (malangkota.go.id) – The Malang City Government (Pemkot) has shown a strong commitment to realizing the People's School (SR) program initiated by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto. The SR program aims to provide access to quality education for children from extremely poor families, while also being a real effort to break the chain of poverty.

As part of the preparation, the Malang City Government Team led by the Regional Secretary (Sekda) of Malang City, Erik Setyo Santoso together with the relevant regional apparatus attended the People's School Desk with the Ministry of Social Affairs in Jakarta, Tuesday (22/4/2025). This activity is a forum for coordination and technical clarification related to the readiness of the implementation of the SR program in the region.

Previously, the Indonesian Ministry of Social Affairs Team had conducted a review and assessed that Malang City was ready to implement the People's School program, both in terms of infrastructure and human resources.

Erik explained that a number of stages had been carried out intensively, starting from identifying and preparing the location, buildings, to the verification process for prospective students.

"We are very committed to actively participating in the implementation of President Prabowo's priority programs. There are a series of stages that we have carried out, and we are also proud because the relevant ministries have directly reviewed the location in Malang City," explained Erik.

Erik further explained that Malang City has around 8.000 square meters of land with existing buildings that are ready for light renovation. The buildings are equipped with classrooms, laboratories, sports facilities, and even housing in the form of flats that will function as dormitories, and this is in line with the concept of the Sekolah Rakyat boarding school.

Erik also said that the Malang City Government is currently completing the verification process for prospective students based on the Integrated Social Welfare Data (DTKS), especially those included in decile 1 and decile 2.

"We are currently still finalizing. Certainly, for the initial stage, what we are preparing is the building land, then we will verify prospective students according to the provisions of the DTKS (Integrated Social Welfare Data) which are included in decile 1, decile 2, and so on, where we are preparing several study groups including teachers and other personnel," he explained.

Meanwhile, Malang Mayor Wahyu Hidayat when met separately stated that with the existence of the People's School, Malang City's vision for equitable and inclusive education is increasingly being realized. "This will be a golden opportunity for children from underprivileged families to gain access to quality education. And through this SR program, the right to education for all Indonesian children is guaranteed, and equal distribution of education quality can be realized," he said.

With the readiness of facilities, support from the central government, and cross-ministerial collaboration, Malang City is expected to be a successful example of the implementation of the People's School. This program is not only about education, but is a way out of poverty and opens up a better future for the next generation of the nation. (yul/yn)
