Implementation of Food Security, Class I Malang Prison Utilizes Land as Productive Area

Klojen (malangkota.go.id) – The Malang City Government appreciates the steps taken by the Class I Malang Penitentiary (Lapas) in optimizing land use in the prison area into productive agricultural land. In fact, the Mayor of Malang, Wahyu Hidayat, also harvested edamame during a visit to the Class I Malang Prison, Monday (28/4/2025).

The agricultural activities carried out in this prison are not only to meet food needs independently. Farming is one of the work activities carried out so that inmates have skills that can be used when they have 'graduated' and returned to society later.

"This is the result of those who have been educated by officers to plant. And amazingly, edamame cultivation in Malang City only exists in Lowokwaru Prison. This can also improve food security which is our shared priority. Alhamdulillah this is the second harvest and the results are not inferior to edamame from outside," said Malang Mayor Wahyu HIdayat.

Similarly, the Head of the Malang City Food Security and Agriculture Service (Dispangtan) Slamet Husnan Hariyadi gave a thumbs up to the use of land carried out by the Malang Class I Prison. According to him, the use of the yard in this prison is very massive, very planned, and measurable.

"This is very beneficial for residents, because they get knowledge and education on how to manage a good environment and in it there are livestock, fisheries, and plant cultivation businesses, both productive plants and ornamental plants. Even here there is a tissue culture laboratory for orchid cultivation which will facilitate and accelerate the development of orchid plants," he explained.

Slamet also appreciated the edamame cultivation carried out in the prison located on Jalan Asahan, Bunulrejo Village. "This is extraordinary because in Malang City there are no farmers who grow edamame. The results are also very good, from two kilograms of seeds, two and a half quintals can be harvested with a planting period of 65 days, and this is the second harvest," he said.

Meanwhile, Head of Malang I Prison Ketut Akbar Herry Achjar revealed that his party has been conducting agricultural activities for a long time. Agricultural activities are part of the implementation of the food security program according to the direction of the Minister of Immigration and Corrections. In addition, of course, the realization of food security is the Asta Cita program of President Prabowo.

"So in this prison with limited space, there is no place that is not covered."jojoh (planted_red). God willing, there is no empty space, we use it for food security. Alhamdulillah today also coincides with our harvest of edamame that we planted on the branghang (brand gang), the edge of the wall," he concluded. (ari/yn)
