Malang Mayor Appreciates Activities of Class I Malang Prison Inmates

Starfruit (malangkota.go.id) – Malang Mayor Wahyu Hidayat visited the Class I Malang Correctional Institution (Lapas), Monday (28/4/2025). This visit was held in the framework of the 61st Correctional Service Day Commemoration which falls on April 27, 2025. This year, the commemoration of Correctional Service Day carries the theme 'Corrections Must Be Beneficial for the Community'. This commemoration is an evaluation to strengthen the commitment of all correctional personnel in realizing the goals of the correctional system.

The Mayor of Malang, Wahyu Hidayat, accompanied by the Head of Class I Malang Prison, Ketut Akbar Herry Achjar, greeted the inmates

During his visit, the Mayor of Malang, who was also present with several heads of related regional apparatuses, saw various activities of correctional inmates (WBP) in the prison that was established in 1918. "There are so many activities and business fields that are carried out. Even the products are not inferior to those outside. Starting from paintings, batik, garments, to mushroom cultivation, orchids, edamame, and fish. Extraordinary, and I take my hat off to them," he said in appreciation.

Wahyu hopes that Class I Malang Prison can always strengthen its role in providing real benefits by providing guidance for inmates. "This is all so that these inmates can have provisions and skills when they are released. Hopefully, the prison can continue to provide good guidance and provide benefits so that when they return to society later, they can be well received," continued Wahyu.

Meanwhile, Head of Malang I Prison Ketut Akbar Herry Achjar said that his party always builds a positive image for the prison and its inmates. The prison is expected to be a place to carve out hope and rebuild human identity. The prison has the responsibility to run rehabilitation and resocialization programs as well as security. He revealed that there are 2.067 inmates in this Class I Malang Prison who receive coaching to improve their quality.

"Image what people outside the prison see is black, this prison is trash. We, together with all the inmates, are committed to throwing away image that. That in prison it is not black, but there is a rainbow. There is a value of creativity that inmates have through existing activities. And this can later be brought out into the community," explained Akbar.

Akbar also emphasized that his party could not walk alone in providing guidance for the inmates. "We also need support from the local government as well as the community, media, NGOs. Let's continue to support these friends, don't always look for the faults, but look for the positives and the shortcomings are raised, because all those in this are our brothers," he concluded.
