Falling Staple Food Prices Trigger Deflation in Malang City

Klojen (malangkota.go.id) – The price drop in the food, beverage and tobacco group triggered deflation in Malang City after inflation in the last two months. This was conveyed by the Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Malang City, Umar Sjaifudin in the Official Statistics News Release (BRS) which was carried out in a hybrid manner from the Ngalam Command Center (NCC) Room of Malang City Hall, Monday (2/6/2025).

Umar said the above group experienced deflation of 0,82% and contributed the most to monthly inflation of 0,24%. The decline in several food commodities such as cayenne pepper, shallots, red chilies, garlic and chicken meat affected deflation in this group.

"Another group that also drove deflation was the transportation group, which experienced a price decrease of 0,12% with a deflation contribution of 0,22%. Meanwhile, the groups contributing to inflation in May 2025 were tomatoes, mobile phone credit rates, and rice," he added.

Umar further added that Malang City experienced monthly deflation in May 2025. (month to month) by 0,21% after two months earlier Malang City recorded inflation. The deflation figure that occurred this month, explained Umar, is in line with the trend that occurred at the East Java Province and national levels which also experienced deflation, namely 0,34% and 0,37%.

Not only that, the distribution of monthly inflation in East Java in May 2025 was... month to month recorded all districts/cities experiencing deflation. "When compared to all cities in East Java, Malang City's deflation is in the first place with the lowest, and the deepest is in Sumenep, which is 0,79%," he explained.

By year to date or cumulative inflation from January to May, Malang City inflation was 0,94%. This figure is higher than the province, which is 0,89%, but lower than the national figure of 1,19%. While Malang City inflation is year on year reaching 1,36% higher than East Java which was 1,20%, but lower than the national figure of 1,60%.

Responding to this, the Mayor of Malang, Wahyu Hidayat, who was also present at the BRS Release, expressed his appreciation to the BPS of Malang City which is always consistent in presenting accurate, relevant and reliable statistical data and information.

Regarding the data presented in this BRS Release, Wahyu said that in general the prices of basic necessities in Malang City are still under control. Even so, Wahyu reminded to remain vigilant and continue to monitor so that inflation remains under control. According to him, the deflation that occurred in Malang City is also not a negative trend.

"There are several factors that cause deflation, one of which is after Eid. But we will continue to monitor and check how to raise this deflation again even though it is generally considered safe," he concluded. (iu/yn)
